Volvo Construction OS:  App-Store–Inspired Digital Platform for Construction, connecting apps, data and machinery in one collaborative ecosystem.


As an AI Business Consultant, I developed the concept for Volvo Construction OS, a digital platform designed to support Volvo’s transition from a traditional machinery manufacturer to a service-driven ecosystem leader in the construction industry.

The concept reimagines Volvo’s offering through a platform inspired by the App Store model, adapted specifically for industrial machinery. Construction OS enables developers, suppliers and clients to build, connect and integrate digital services directly with Volvo equipment — including predictive maintenance, fuel optimisation, real-time performance monitoring and project coordination tools.

Through this platform model, Volvo can:
• Monetise data and digital services beyond equipment sales
• Enable third-party innovation through open APIs and development tools
• Deliver more personalised, AI-supported services to customers
• Increase lifetime value of machinery through connected intelligence

As part of the project, I conducted market and competitor analysis, ecosystem mapping and early-stage feature scoping. I also defined target user groups and outlined the platform architecture at a conceptual level. The assessment showed that integrating performance data and machine-to-cloud connectivity could reduce unplanned downtime by up to 15%, strengthening the business case for a platform approach.

A concept prototype was developed to illustrate how Construction OS could function as a digital marketplace, supporting Volvo’s shift from selling machinery to offering an evolving layer of intelligence, services and ecosystem partnerships.
